The smell is interesting, not terrible, but it's a heck of a lot better than a stinky ear infection or pre-infection. Pretty easy to use, but here are some tips to make it easier. This can be a one person job, but two is a lot easier.1. Get four half sheet paper towels or two full paper towels ready, folded in half and in half again.2. Have your dog sit and position yourself on a chair behind him. Give him a treat.3. Prepare the bottle--open the dispenser or unscrew the dropper (depending on which one you're applying).4. Fold both ears up and hold them with one hand.5. With the other hand grab the bottle or dropper and gently pour/squeeze into the first ear up to the amount recommended. I generally nearly fill the canal with the wash (squeeze bottle) and use 3 nearly full droppers of the tonic.6. Grab one of your quarters paper towels, cover the ear canal and gently rub/massage as the base of the ear for 30 seconds to ensure the wash or tonic is evenly distributed through the ear canal. Some will come out, which is why you have the paper towel.7. Repeat for the other ear. Offer him a treat while you're massaging (again, a 2nd person is helpful).8. Try to nudge him outside while holding the paper towels on his ears before letting him tear off into the yard. More wash or tonic will come out at this point so watch out and try to get him outside first.NOTE: Use the wash in the morning and the tonic in the afternoon or evening.Do this ever day for a week or two and then once a week as maintenance.

Ok, here's the scoop....I need a really effective ear wash and treatment, partly because my dogs are flapping their ears so much I'm surprised they don't have brain damage and mostly because they each way around 110 lbs. and the wrestle-mania like effort I have to employ to do this means I need to get something that works so I can limit the physical damage to myself and psychological damage this seems to have on them.Ear wash - good stuff. Even though they hate hate hate me messing in their ears, this stuff seems to soothe the inch or pain that they are experiencing. It has an orange iodine-like color that will get flapped all over though so best to attempt the dog-wrestling outside. It's got aloe and that seems to work pretty good at calming the irritation.Ear tonic - good but takes a lot. The tonic seems to sting my dogs ears when used. I get a lot of crying and panting when this goes in. It does help and afterward the ear flapping seems to slow way down, which is a good sign. My only complaint about the tonic is it says to use 3-5 dropperfuls in each ear. First thing - that is nearly impossible to do given after one dropperful my dogsare thinking I'm trying to kill them. Holding them for 2-4 more is just not possible. Chalk that up to my wimpy dogs, not the tonics fault. That will also mean though that the 4 oz. bottle will not last long.They do send you a little bag of treats with your order (at least that's what I received) and the dogs love them. I wish I could get that Pavlov's response of using the treats to get them to like the treatment....not working. And, the company donates to Last Chance Animal Rescue with every purchase, so they have a good soul.If they could add a little tranquilizer to those treats, I'd be a customer for life!

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - floppy ears. His ears would smell and be reddened and inflamed- he produces a lot of ear wax.Using Mister Ben's has changed everything!!! No more itchy waxy, inflamed ears. No hard work for mom either 😉Yes it smells like vinegar. I don't care and neither does Bogart. All we care about is the fantastic results we've gotten from this product. (From June 8, 2021) We've been happily using this product at any sign of inflammation/irritation for 6months now and it stops the problem, helps heal and protect from the first dose.I recommend this to anyone who needs help with their fur babies smelly/irritated ears.Also- we have the cat version for our Maine Coon. (Also see my update below the original review)My 12-year-old min pin (a rescue) had ear infections that wouldn't go away, although we went to the vets routinely and followed their instructions. Unfortunately, he ended up losing most of his hearing earlier this year. He used to jump onto me when I got home, but he could no longer hear my voice or the door open. I tried any product or home remedies I could find that sounded legitimate...without success—then I found this item.Around the 10th day or so, he began to notice when I spoke to him loudly. He doesn't seem to understand what I'm saying, but he hears enough to notice I'm talking to him! Also, he seems to hear when I clap my hands. Since he seems to enjoy getting his ears massaged twice a day anyhow, I will continue massaging his ears to see if he regains his hearing further.===UPDATE===Perseverance really is the key here. He used to fight our vacuum cleaner before he went deaf, at which point he no longer even noticed when I turned on the vacuum. The other day, though, when I turned the vacuum on, he came barking at it/me from another room!!! I don't necessarily expect his hearing to recover further, but this product is slowly but surely helping him. I am grateful...because he has had a rough life and I want to give him a lot of love for the remainder of his life...and maybe some hearing back, too.
